Lichting celebrates the most promising fashion talent by featuring the best academy graduates of the year in one event. Lichting was founded in 2007 to bridge the gap between the academies and students on the one side and the talent-hungry fashion industry on the other. Ever since, Lichting has been opening the doors to a multidisciplinary interpretation of fashion, showing an innovative and contemporary interpretation of it. The participants of Lichting excel at what they do; whether they specialise in couture, digital design, performance, commercial product, innovative design or traditional design practices, provided that they are the best of their generation and assure a high standard of impressive work.
The Lichting selection procedure
1. Lichting 2024 works with three selection rounds. The selection process starts with the seven Dutch fashion academies, who send in one student each. These graduates are guaranteed through to the Dutch jury pitches.
2. Since 2022, Lichting takes on a new format and makes it possible for all design graduates to participate via an open call. the Lichting team selects 25 candidates from those submissions who will be through to the third round, including the seven selected graduates from the academies.
3. All 25 candidates present their concept, process and work to a Dutch jury that chooses 10 participants. These ten candidates participate in the Lichting trajectory & presentation at Amsterdam Fashion Week. As always, the participants will be guided and prepared to pitch to an international jury during Amsterdam Fashion Week and participate in the Lichting presentation for the panel and curated audience. The panel will pick one winner for Lichting 2024, who will receive a cash prize of €10.000
*The seven Dutch academies that participate in Lichting are AMFI – Amsterdam Fashion Institute, ArtEZ University of the Arts, Gerrit Rietveld Academy, MAFAD Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts and Design, Royal Academy of Art, Utrecht School of the Arts, Willem de Kooning Academy. Students from AFA – Amsterdam Fashion Academy can apply via the open call.
Requirements
Participants of Lichting each stand out in what they do; whether that is couture, digital design, performance, commercial product, innovative design or handcrafted materials, the condition is that you create impressive work and excel in your work.
All Lichting participants;
- graduated in fashion design at an HBO fashion academy
- graduated between 1 January 2024 and 1 August 2024
- deliver an outstanding performance in fashion design
- can make their concept, process & work clear in the application
- are available at all dates Lichting takes place
