As part of the official launch of their newest mini-exhibition, the Amsterdam Museum is set to host a captivating talk that delves into the fascinating world of their fashion collection and the significance of its curation. “Unboxing: Fashion from the Archives” promises to offer fresh insights and a deeper understanding of the significance of fashion within a museum context.
“Unboxing: Fashion from the Archives” boasts an impressive lineup of confirmed speakers, including Roberto Luis Martins, curator of Fashion and Popular Culture at the Amsterdam Museum, renowned fashion designer Tess van Zalinge, acclaimed designer Mohammed Benchellal and Mariette Hoitink, head of the esteemed fashion talent program: Lichting. Moderating the discussion is Aynouk Tan, a distinguished fashion journalist, curator, teacher, and advisor, known for her profound knowledge and engaging style. Tan is expected to steer the conversation towards enlightening and thought-provoking directions.
The talk will take inspiration from the current mini-exhibition, exploring critical questions such as what defines and determines the value of fashion in a museum collection, as well as the significance of developing and preserving a fashion collection for both the fashion industry and cultural heritage. The primary aim of “Unboxing: Fashion from the Archives” is to broaden and deepen attendees’ perspectives on accumulating a fashion collection and its curation. The discussion will enrich the themes presented in the mini-exhibition, offering valuable commentary from a diverse panel of experts.
Running concurrently with the talk, the mini-exhibition “Unboxing: Fashion from the Archives” at the Amsterdam Museum showcases new highlights from the museum’s extensive fashion collection. The mini-exhibition is open from August 23 to November 10. Highlights include a 16th-century bodice, creations by leading Amsterdam designers such as Mohammed Benchellal and Tess van Zalinge, and the iconic Pink Feather Explosion dress by David Laport, famously worn by pop star Rihanna. The mini-exhibition not only displays these exquisite pieces but also explores innovative ways to present its archive, aiming to make the knowledge and feel of fashion tangible through various experimental approaches.
