The New Originals Presents ‘Home Is Where the Heart Is’ at Nxt Museum

A saxophone player moves through the room as a crowd of young creatives follows, dancing and gathering around one another. On the walls and floor, a film flickers across the space, while the shadows of performers stretch across the projected images. For The New Originals, Amsterdam Fashion Week becomes less about presenting clothes and more about bringing its community to life.

Celebrating 11 years since its founding in Amsterdam, the multidisciplinary creative platform presented Home Is Where the Heart Is at Nxt Museum, in collaboration with filmmaker and creative director Ebeneza Blanche. Bringing together fashion, film, music and performance, the presentation reflected TNO’s longstanding belief that creativity is a form of movement, and that clothing is only one part of the culture built around it.

The clothes themselves appeared with the same sense of ease as the crowd surrounding them. A brown polkadot tracksuit was layered over a matching black polkadot T-shirt, with a scarf casually hanging from the pocket. A bright yellow leopard-print bomber was paired with a matching belt and zip-up hoodie, while the print returned later in a shirt knotted at the waist. A blue checked windbreaker was styled with a matching TNO bag. Across the room, the styling felt natural, playful and unmistakably TNO: streetwear worn as it would be within the community itself, rather than presented as something distant from it.

That sense of community was perhaps the most striking element of the presentation. Boys and girls gathered, danced and vibed together, with young people from the neighbourhood among the cast. The atmosphere felt spontaneous and familiar, more like being invited into a gathering than attending a traditional fashion presentation.

The energy shifted as the short film created by TNO and Blanche began to unfold. Inspired by Blanche’s own mother and her story of migration from Ghana, the film followed the same crowd that had just been dancing through the space into a house party, where the atmosphere was abruptly interrupted by men pounding on the door. The story then moved to a mother cleaning in her kitchen, the sound dropping away until the silence became almost deafening. As she walks home, her expression changes, opening into flashes of another generation and another place: Ghana, police sirens, people carrying suitcases and moving in a line, and a figure left breathless on the ground.

The film’s final moments return to something more intimate. As the credits roll, a young girl checks out her outfit and dances around her bedroom. A small act that connects the stories of one generation to the next.

For TNO, Home Is Where the Heart Is ultimately felt less like a collection presentation than an expression of the world surrounding the brand. Eleven years after its founding, the Amsterdam-based platform continues to build around creatives, using clothing, storytelling, music and community as different ways of expressing the same idea: that home is not simply a place, but something carried, shared and continually made by the people within it.

The community TNO brought together continued to gather after the presentation, with Belvedere Vodka drinks setting the scene as the evening extended beyond the final performance.
